Dele Alli plans calmer approach to staying aggressive

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli has no intention of abandoning his fiery competitiveness but is working on tempering his reactions during heated moments during matches.

Alli’s combustible nature was back in the spotlight recently when he was handed a three-match European ban for a wild challenge on Gent’s Brecht Dejaegere during Tottenham’s Europa League clash at Wembley last month.

The 20-year-old England international also served a three-match suspension for punching West Bromwich Albion’s Claudio Yacob towards the end of last season as Spurs slipped out of the Premier League title race.

“There’s been a lot said about me and my aggression but I think, to be honest, it’s not something I’m going to look to change,” Alli told reporters.

“That’s the player I am, I’ve always been like that since I was younger. It’s about getting it under control and I think I’ve been doing that.

“I’ve got to keep improving and learning; not to play with less aggression but how I react in different situations.”

Alli said he was “relieved” not to have seriously hurt Dejaegere, especially after seeing Ireland skipper Seamus Coleman suffer a double leg break in a tackle by Wales’ Neil Taylor in A World Cup qualifier on Friday.

“I feel sorry for Seamus… I’m sure the guy (Taylor) didn’t mean to do that.” he added. “Like my tackle; I felt I was relieved that nothing bad happened to the player.”

Ride-hailing group Uber Technologies will withdraw services in Denmark next month due to a taxi law that sets out new requirements for drivers such as mandatory fare metres, the company said on Tuesday.

Uber has faced headwinds since its app went online in Denmark in 2014 as local taxi driver unions, companies and politicians complained that Uber posed unfair competition by not meeting legal standards required for established taxi firms.

Uber, which says about 2,000 Danish drivers and 300,000 riders use its app, said in a statement that it would shut down its services in Denmark on April 18 due to the new law.

Despite the minority liberal government’s ambitions to deregulate the taxi business and accommodate new operations like Uber, the taxi law presented in February introduced measures such as mandatory fare meters and seat sensors.

“For us to operate in Denmark again the proposed regulations need to change. We will continue to work with the government in the hope that they will update their proposed regulations and enable Danes to enjoy the benefits of modern technologies like Uber,” Uber said.

Two Danish Uber driver were fined in November for violating taxi laws and in December Uber’s European division was indicted by Danish public prosecutors on charges of assisting those drivers in violating taxi laws.

Uber said it would allocate resources to help Danish Uber drivers through the shutdown process.

Akhilesh Yadav elected leader of Samajwadi Party in both Houses of UP Legislature

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was on Tuesday unanimously elected Leader of the SP Legislature Party in both the Houses of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature, at a meeting of party legislators. SP veterans Azam Khan and Shivpal Singh Yadav were conspicuous by their absence from the meeting.

At the meeting of SP MLAs and MLCs, the former chief minister was unanimously elected as the combined leader of the party in both the state Assembly and Council, SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said.

Besides, Akhilesh was also authorised to pick the leader of the party in the Legislative Council, he added.

Akhilesh is a member of the Upper House, where senior SP leader Ahmed Hasan leads the party.

Akhilesh had yesterday nominated senior-most party MLA Ram Govind Chaudhary as the leader of the SP in the Assembly, paving the way for his becoming the LOP in the Assembly.

Both Azam Khan and Shivpal Singh Yadav, who were strong contenders for the post of LOP in the Assembly but failed to find favour with Akhilesh, gave a miss to today’s meeting.

Commenting on the choice of Chaudhary for the key post, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) accused the SP of “acting under BJP’s pressure” to deny senior leader Azam Khan the position.

“SP acted under BJP’s pressure to deny the position of LOP to a dynamic and strong leader like Azam Khan, which could have posed problems for them in the legislature,” state RLD chief Masood Ahmed alleged.

“Had Khan been made the Leader of Opposition, he would have retained his government bungalow and there would also have been no question on his Maulana Jauhar University in Rampur. So, BJP exerted pressure on Netaji (Mulayam Singh) to stop it,” he added.

RLD has one MLA in the 403-member state Assembly.

Miami Open’s future? ‘It’s a hard one,’ Roger Federer says

Miami Open officials would prefer to stay on Key Biscayne, and cost isn’t an issue. (Source: USA Today Sports) Miami Open officials would prefer to stay on Key Biscayne, and cost isn’t an issue. (Source: USA Today Sports)

When it comes to tournament matchups, Key Biscayne has fallen behind. A stalled plan to upgrade the complex has caused the Miami Open to decline in prestige, raising doubts about its future.

“When I first arrived here, it was always the biggest tournament after the Grand Slams,” said retiring tour veteran Tommy Haas, who played in the event for the final time last week. “Unfortunately it just hasn’t been able to grow.”

Aside from the Grand Slams, tennis’ premier event is now Indian Wells, where Haas is tournament director as he ends a 22-year playing career. The Miami Open still draws most of the world’s top players, along with more than 300,000 spectators each year, but the future of the event has been in question since a 2015 appeals court decision that prevents improvements to the Key Biscayne facility.

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is interested in moving the tournament 18 miles north to his team’s stadium. Ross doesn’t want to buy the tournament but would invest in a tennis center on stadium grounds because he wants to keep the event in South Florida.

Miami Open officials would prefer to stay on Key Biscayne, and cost isn’t an issue. The tournament is willing to pay for $50 million in improvements to its complex.

But the site is a Miami-Dade County park, and heirs of the family that donated the land have long fought to limit construction. Barring a return to court, the tournament is blocked from carrying out planned upgrades.

“I think at this point everybody understands if it were to move,” said 18-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, who has been coming to the event since he was 14.

Rumors fly like shanked forehands. There has been speculation for more than a year that the tournament might relocate, with potential sites ranging from South America to China, but tournament officials say they’re staying in Miami.

“The question is, is everybody happy this way or not?” Federer said. “If you want to go bigger, clearly you have to move. But is the grass always greener on the other side? I’m not sure. It’s a hard one.”

For 31 years the tournament has been held on Key Biscayne, a picturesque island across Biscayne Bay from downtown Miami. When a permanent stadium opened in 1994, some heralded the event as a fifth Grand Slam.

But there has been little investment in the property since, causing growing complaints from sponsors and players that the facilities have slipped behind Indian Wells and other events.

Rafael Nadal, a four-time finalist playing in the event for the 13th time, said more courts are among needed changes. But the Spaniard loves the subtropical setting and international flavor.

“The place is beautiful, and it will be great if it can stay here,” Nadal said. “The most important thing that is the tournament stays in Miami. Miami is city well-known all around the world. It’s important that we have our bigger tournaments in important cities.”

But Key Biscayne is no longer even the biggest tournament in March.

Indian Wells, held in the California desert earlier in the month, can point to extensive upgrades in recent years, includes a 16,100-seat stadium billed as second-largest in the world for tennis, with 44 suites. Key Biscayne has a 13,800-seat stadium with 28 suits. While the 32-acre Key Biscayne site has only one permanent stadium, the 54-acre Indian Wells site includes a new permanent second stadium with 8,000 seats.

Players rave about the complex in California.

“We are sort of like the benchmark of what is possible,” Haas said.

On Key Biscayne there are complaints about locker rooms, bathrooms, crowded grounds and the temporary second stadium.

“Unfortunately the tournament just hasn’t been able to grow,” Haas said. “Unfortunately there is not much that has been done in many, many years now. Like everything in life you have to progress, and you have to step it up at times, and give the players and fans and sponsors what they want.

“Maybe they are going to move the event at some point, which would be sad. This is a great spot. People love coming here.”

Australian cricketers are no longer my friends says Virat Kohli

Well then #INDvAUS pic.twitter.com/xciqRDoma8 — cricket.com.au Video (@CricketVideo) March 28, 2017

Philippe Coutinho unconcerned by ‘improved’ Everton ahead of derby

Philippe Coutinho said he is concentrating only on Liverpool’s progress. (Source: Reuters) Philippe Coutinho said he is concentrating only on Liverpool’s progress. (Source: Reuters)

Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho cannot see his side slipping below local rivals Everton by the end of the season as the teams gear up for a Premier League Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Everton, currently three places behind their fourth-placed city rivals in the league table, can cut the gap to just three points with a victory at Anfield.

Coutinho, who is away on international duty with Brazil, said he was concentrating only on Liverpool’s progress.

“I don’t think about (Everton’s form) or worry about that,” Coutinho told the reporters. “We will be ready. The derby is a very special match for everyone, the fans and the players.”

Liverpool are unbeaten in Merseyside encounters since 2010 but will face a Ronald Koeman side that have picked up 23 of 30 points since the turn of the year.

Coutinho acknowledged Everton’s recent progress and said it would mean a lot more to the fans if Liverpool could find a way to win the derby.

“We know what it means… this time it is even more because Everton have improved so much in recent weeks,” he added.

“We know it won’t be easy but we know we have to win, for our fans, for our morale and for everybody.”

Liverpool have lost just one out of their 14 league games at Anfield this season, scoring 36 goals and conceding 13 in the process.

High-fiber diet may check onset of diabetes

Western diet affects human gut microbiota. (Source: Thinkstock Images) Western diet affects human gut microbiota. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

A diet rich in high-fiber foods — such as fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains — encourage the production of short-chain fatty acids that are beneficial for the immune system and may help protect against the onset of Type 1 diabetes, a study shows.

ALSO READ | ‘Dimpi’ to the rescue of diabetics

The findings showed that the western diet, which lacks dietary fibre affects human gut microbiota and the production of short-chain fatty acids acetate or butyrate.

ALSO READ | Mediterranean diet may help treat HIV, diabetes patients

The specialised diet uses starches — found in many foods including fruit and vegetables — that resist digestion and pass through to the colon or large bowel where they are broken down by microbiota (gut bacteria).

This process of fermentation produces acetate and butyrate which, when combined, provided complete protection against Type 1 diabetes, the researchers said.

“Our research found that eating a diet which encourages the gut bacteria that produce high levels of acetate or butyrate improves the integrity of the gut lining, which reduces pro-inflammatory factors and promote immune tolerance,” said Eliana Marino researcher at Monash University in Australia.

“We found this had an enormous impact on the development of Type 1 diabetes,” Marino added.

The study, published in the journal Nature Immunology, highlighted how non-pharmaceutical approaches including special diets and gut bacteria could treat or prevent autoimmune diseases such as Type 1 diabetes.

“The materials we used are something you can digest that is comprised of natural products – resistant starches are a normal part of our diet. The diets we used are highly efficient at releasing beneficial metabolites. I would describe them as an extreme superfood,” explained Charles Mackay, Professor at Monash University.

However, the diet was not just about eating vegetables or high-fibre foods but involved special food and a special process and would need to be managed by nutritionists, dietitians and clinicians, Mackay noted.

India beat Australia 2-1 in the 4-match series to claim Border-Gavaskar Trophy. (Source: Reuters) India beat Australia 2-1 in the 4-match series to claim Border-Gavaskar Trophy. (Source: Reuters)

From on-field spats to some close encounters on the field, this four-match Test series between India and Australia has witnessed it all. After being thumped in the first Test in Pune, the Virat Kohli-led team came back in a more strong fashion to square the series in Bangalore and then eventually winning it in Dharamsala after the third clash in Ranchi ended in a draw.

India have had a terrific home season and their domination in Test cricket in the past couple of years have led them to rise to number one spot in the Test rankings. But there is more to this series win that just being sitting at the helm. India are all set to grab an amount of US $1 million prize cheque provided by the ICC April 1 cut-off date.

READ: I have been in my own bubble and have let my emotions slip. I apologise for that: Steve Smith

The amount is reward given to the team by the International Cricket Council for their magnificent game play on the field.

India just lost one game in this 13-match home season. They romped teams like New Zealand, South Africa, England, Bangladesh and Australia to add to their series win tally.

READ: Australian cricketers are no longer my friends, says India captain Virat Kohli

The Test at Dharamsala never looked easily for the hosts. On a pitch that seemed favorable for the batsmen, India lost the toss and Australian captain Steve Smith elected to bat first. A partnership between Smith and his deputy created pressure on the Indian side but debutant Kuldeep Yadav came in for the rescue of the home side. The Chinaman rookie picked up four wickets to halt Australia’s run flow and bundle them out for 300 runs.

Later India took the lead in first innings of 32 runs. The hosts then rode on aesthetic bowling performances from Umehs Yadav, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja to wrap their innings for 137 on day three. India were handed a target of 106 runs when KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane chipped in with spectacular partnership to help India claim the Border-Gavskar Trophy.
