IPL 2017: In season of injuries, Rohit Sharma wants to put his season of injury behind

Rather than thinking what has happened, it is better to think how I am going to make myself ready. That is how I was thinking about all the time.”

Rohit Sharma Rather than thinking what has happened, it is better to think how I am going to make myself ready. That is how I was thinking about all the time.”Rohit Sharma

THE BUILD-UP to IPL 10 so far has been more about those who’ll miss out rather than those who will grace the stage for the big anniversary edition of the T20 extravaganza. But one familiar face will be using the glitzy platform to make a return to big-ticket cricket after a five-month layoff. And Rohit Sharma, who’s led Mumbai Indians to two title triumphs in the last five years, on Sunday sounded both relieved and excited to be back.

This was his first media appearance since suffering a harrowing injury back in late October, and we’re at a posh South Mumbai hotel where he’s flanked by new coach and fellow batting stylist, Mahela Jayawardene. But ask him about the injury and you can almost see him cringe while recalling the moment when he realized his home season was more or less done with. It led to him having to undergo thigh surgery in London that robbed him off some considerable playing time at a crucial stage in his international career. So much so that the sound that he heard while scrambling across for a single during the final ODI of the India-New Zealand series in Vizag, is still very vivid in his memory.

“I was scared when that happened. It’s something which has never happened to me. I heard a very loud noise while taking a run. I was a little scared until we got an MRI done, I did not know what to expect and what it was. But once everything was clear, once the days passed by, we spoke to a lot of doctors around the world and with Patrick (Farhart, the Indian team physio) as well, they all gave me the confidence saying it was not a major problem, it’s just a small injury that you need to go through,” he said.

A lot has changed since Rohit limped off around the time the lengthy home season was just about getting warmed up. India won every series across all formats, and consolidated their reign at the top of Test cricket for starters. A number of Australian players aren’t Kohli’s “friends” anymore and India has a new triple centurion, one who might not have played if Rohit had been fit. In many ways, Rohit will have to start afresh and the IPL, a tournament that he’s taken by storm with the bat very often, could be just the stage he needs to make his presence felt again. Rohit will obviously be a shoo-in for the Indian squad that will travel to England to defend the Champions Trophy in June. But having started off with a special series against New Zealand, which was one of his best in Test cricket, missing out on 10 Tests must have been debilitating, especially since he’s yet to make the longer format his own.

So it was only natural for him to not take too kindly to his rehab stint at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore being referred to as a “holiday” by one reporter. “I was not on holiday. I was in Bangalore (National Cricket Academy) if you want to call that as a holiday destination then you may,” he said before adding, “Most important thing at that moment is your mind-set. Rather than thinking what has happened, it is better to think how I am going to make myself ready. That is how I was thinking about all the time. It was tough to sit in the hotel room, watching the team play. It is always tough. But I guess you have to go through it. I have been through it many times before. These things happen. I was only focusing on how quicker I can get back on to the field.”

While most of the interaction was dominated by queries and responses to how Mumbai Indians are preparing and hoping to fare in the tenth edition of the IPL; the more poignant moments surrounded their long-standing captain’s inopportune injury and how he’s coped with it. But he didn’t quite agree with a suggestion that the layoff had set his career back a few steps. Said Rohit, “I don’t think so. I am just 29. Injuries are part and parcel. Five months of missing cricket does not do any bad. These things are bound to happen. Even in future, these things will happen. The focus is always on, if you get injures, to stay strong and come back stronger. I am looking forward. There is so much cricket coming up.”

Your guide to baseball’s opening day 2017 and what happened this spring

To the old adage that spring training statistics don’t mean anything – well, it’s pretty much true. They can signal great things to come. Last spring, Nolan Arenado hit .542 before turning in an MVP-type season. They also can tease with impish delight. See: Maikel Franco, 2016 spring training home run leader. And then come the times they’re just dead wrong. Before an oblique injury, Matt Carpenter’s OPS was nearly double the .507 he put up in Florida.

Point is, trying to turn a month’s worth of statistics from exhibition games in which the quality of pitching ranges from the best in the world to guys who will be unemployed before March ends is, at best, inexact. So understand, the following is not as much a prediction of Major League Baseball’s 2017 season as it is an accounting of this last month and where some of baseball’s best and brightest slot in.

Getting boldfaced, of course, necessitates a sway in one direction or the other, and …

1. Bryce Harper finds himself on the right side of the ledger after his disappointing 2016 season. It’s crazy to think Harper is still only 24 years old, still full of so much more after hitting .330/.460/.649 in his MVP-winning 2015 season. And yet chasing that with a .243/.373/.441 line was like following a shot of Bailey’s with some lime juice.

Bryce Harper hit .243 with 24 home runs last season. (AP) More

This spring has offered something closer to the 2015 version of Harper. His eight home runs lead baseball, and they came in just 56 at-bats, the sort of ratio that would make Babe Ruth jealous. Know what else would make him jealous? Getting to hit off Sean Gilmartin, Cy Sneed, Stephen Fife, Mike Leake, Reymin Guduan, Zack Wheeler, Seth Lugo and Paul Sewald. Those were the eight pitchers who surrendered Harper’s octet.

Sorry to be all Debbie Downer. It’s just that no one needs a great show of spring power to say that, if healthy, Bryce Harper’s going to be phenomenal. It’s like saying …

2. Mike Trout should win another American League MVP award. Some truths are just obvious.

In Trout’s five major league seasons, he has won the MVP twice and finished second the other three times, the first two of which he deserved to win and the third of which was more or less a coin flip. Perhaps the most amazing part of Trout’s run is his consistency. His batting average always leveled between .287 and .326, his on-base percentage between .377 and .441, his slugging percentage between .550 and .590. He is who he is, even in spring training, where his line this year is a positively Troutian .309/.424/.527.

10 Degrees More

Trout’s kung-fu-grip hold on best-player-in-baseball status isn’t primed to relent anytime soon, not with his prime fully blossoming. Age 25 is a special season. It was Babe Ruth’s finest. Same with Mickey Mantle. Derek Jeter deserved the MVP at 25. Harmon Killebrew never hit better. Vladimir Guerrero, too.

All of which is to say what we know already: Baseball is Mike Trout’s world, and everyone else is subletting. That includes …

3. Greg Bird, he of the spring training-leading 1.582 OPS. It’s easy to forget that coming into the spring, the plan for Bird was a first-base platoon with Tyler Austin. Bird had missed all of last season with a torn labrum in his shoulder. Concerns about his ability to hit left-handed pitching dogged him. A month of crushing mediocre pitching, and all the whispers about Eric Hosmer wearing pinstripes in 2018 seem to have died down.

The Yankees featured the best pitcher this spring as well, with Masahiro Tanaka doing the sort of things New York expected when it guaranteed him $155 million on top of the $20 million it spent on his rights. One earned run across 23 2/3 innings will play. He’ll start the first game of the season Sunday afternoon, as MLB goes to a staggered opening day, with Yankees-Rays at 1 p.m. ET, Giants-Diamondbacks at 4 and Cubs-Cardinals at 8:30, before the remaining 24 teams play Monday. In the meantime, here are that first slate of games’ pitching matchups, worst to best:

Zach Collins saves Gonzaga with serendipitous shot, dominant defense

GLENDALE, Ariz. — With suddenly wobbly Gonzaga in desperate need of a basket after surrendering 16 straight second-half points, freshman center Zach Collins spotted up at the top of the key and confidently called for the ball.

The shot that saved his team’s season felt wrong from the moment it left his hands.

“I thought it was way off,” Collins said. “It completely bricked. It was probably the ugliest shot I’ve ever taken.”

Somehow, someway, the ball deadened on the back rim and rolled in, the extremely fortunate break Gonzaga needed to regain control of a Final Four game that appeared to be slipping away. Collins’ go-ahead 3-pointer put his team back in front for good and sparked the late surge that thwarted South Carolina’s latest upset bid and enabled the Zags to escape with a 77-73 victory.

“I don’t know how it bounced in,” Collins said. “I’ve never seen a shot like that go in, but I’m happy it did.”

The brick that saved #Gonzaga in the #FinalFour by 7-foot freshman #ZachCollins.It snapped a 16-0run & Zags take lead & never trailed again! pic.twitter.com/NrDabLWblM — Kenny Roda (@TheKennyRoda) April 2, 2017

Gonzaga would not be playing for its first national title on Monday night without Collins, who turned in by far the most complete performance of his career on college basketball’s biggest stage. The 7-foot McDonald’s All-American scored 14 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and swatted away six shots, an effort so impressive that it instantly called into question the oft-repeated notion that this is a Final Four without a one-and-done prospect.

While Gonzaga has dabbled with playing Collins and fellow 7-footer Przemek Karnowski at the same time this season, the Zags have typically shied away from it for more than a few minutes here and there. Most opponents have at least one mobile big man who’s an easier cover for quicker, more agile forwards Johnathan Williams and Killian Tillie.

South Carolina was the exception to that rule as the Gamecocks started true big men Chris Silva and Maik Kotsar, neither one of whom are a threat to drive or score away from the rim. As a result, the Gonzaga staff chose to play Karnowski and Collins at the same time more often than ever before, hoping the twin towers look would provide the rim protection and rebounding the Zags needed to stifle a Gamecocks team that relies on attacking the basket and the offensive glass.

“They didn’t have a skilled guy where Collins was going to be chasing on the perimeter or forced into a situation where he was going to be switching a lot of ball screens,” Gonzaga assistant Tommy Lloyd said. “We felt like we could go toe-to-toe with them and not have to adjust anything.”

The stretches when Karnowski and Collins were on the floor together were some of Gonzaga’s best. They repeatedly found one another for high-low baskets, none bigger than the Karnowski layup that put the Zags up five with 4:49 to go and capped the 7-0 spurt that followed Collins’ fortuitous 3-pointer.

Effective as both were on offense, it was their ability to alter shots at the rim that helped Gonzaga hold South Carolina to 37.9 percent shooting.

The sheer mass and consistent verticality of Karnowski makes him an effective rim protector. The long-armed, bouncy-legged Collins found success a different way, displaying impeccable timing as a shot blocker.

Never was that more apparent than in the final two minutes when Collins swallowed up a layup attempt by guard Rakym Felder, leaving South Carolina coach Frank Martin to shout, “Rak! They’re too big! Stop!” Sindarius Thornwell didn’t get the message because Collins swatted away his driving layup attempt on the ensuing possession.

“That just shows how versatile Zach Collins is,” Gonzaga guard Silas Melson said. “He’s a beast. That obviously helped us out because teams aren’t ready for two 7-footers like that.”

Since Collins is the first McDonald’s All-American Gonzaga has ever landed out of high school, it’s tempting to portray him as a monument to the progress the Zags have made since their Cinderella days of the late 1990s and early 2000s. In reality, the late-blooming Collins didn’t blossom into an elite prospect until after he had already pledged to Gonzaga in March of his junior year.

Overshadowed at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman High School by McDonald’s All-Americans Chase Jeter and Stephen Zimmerman, Collins didn’t even start until his senior season. Collins showed flashes of immense potential on the AAU circuit as a sophomore before shutting it down after learning that he had been playing on a broken tibia.

Is It Too Late to Get a Flu Shot?

Flu season might be starting to wind down—it generally goes from October to April—but vaccinations are still in full swing at drugstores (such as CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens), hospitals, and local clinics.

It takes up to two weeks for your body to build immunity after immunization. So is it too late to get a flu shot now, in early April, when flu season is practically over?

“Whenever I’m asked this question, I frankly get uncomfortable because there’s no recommendation not to do it,” says William Schaffner, M.D., a professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. “It is very late, but I would hate to think I’d discourage someone and then they got severe influenza a week and a half from now.”

Graham Snyder, M.D., an infectious diseases physician at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an assistant professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School, echoes that sentiment. “It’s definitely not a waste to get a flu shot,” Snyder says, “in part because the immunity may be important in subsequent years, and it may even be important this year.”

Though flu activity is ramping down, Snyder says that people are still getting sick. He saw several patients in their 90s admitted to the ICU recently, one of whom didn’t get the vaccine. “What if a month ago he had been thinking, ‘It’s March, the flu season is over and I didn’t get the vaccine’?”

This year’s flu season is turning out to be moderately severe because of the domination of the H3N2 strain, which tends to make people sicker, especially the elderly. But it’s following a typical trajectory in terms of duration, Schaffner says.

Flu season usually peaks from December through February or early March, and then winds down. But the timing of those peaks varies from season to season, Snyder says. Though the flu is on the decline overall right now, some areas are still experiencing little bursts of activity.

When to Get Your Shot

The CDC recommends that most people get vaccinated as soon as the shot becomes available, which can be as early as late July. Ideally, you should get it by the end of October. But if you miss your shot in the summer or fall, the CDC says, you should still get it later in the season, even in January or after.

Of course, the vaccine isn’t always 100 percent effective no matter when you get it. Public-health experts predict which three or four flu viruses will be circulating months before a vaccine is developed. So you’ll be protected only against those viruses. If there’s a surprise virus, you might get sick even if you got the vaccine. And as with any virus, it’s possible to get the flu twice in one season if you’re infected by two different strains, though that’s rare, Schaffner explains. Also rare, he says, is getting the flu as late as May or June.

If you get the shot now, it doesn’t mean you should skip next year’s vaccination, because that formulation may be different from this year’s. If you already got this year’s vaccination—even last summer—Schaffner says, you’re still protected and there’s no need for a second shot or a “booster.” The CDC says this year’s vaccine has reduced the risk of catching the flu by nearly half.

5 Things We Know About The ‘Sense8’ Special

It’s been a long time since the release of the first season of Sense8. We still have until May 5th of next year for season 2. But the good news is that we’re getting a Christmas special on December 23rd! So what do we have to look forward to? Here are five things we know about the special so far.

1. We will see Aml Ameen‘s replacement for the first time.

The actor who played Capheus is not returning to the show. He has been replaxed by Toby Onwumere.

.2. We pick up with Sun’s storyline from prison

We left off with Sun still in prison for her brother’s crime. But will the special show her getting released? This photo shows that she is being questioned. This could be due to an investigation concerning Mr. Whispers, or the fact that she’s unjustly in prison.

3. Wolfgang and Kala might be meeting in person.

The couple has been slowly building their relationship over time. It looks like they might actually be meeting in person in this special since both of them are wearing coats!

4. We’ll get an update on Mr. Whispers.

The cluster was able to escape the leader that was hunting them down in the finale. But we’re not quite done with him yet. It looks like he gets into someone else’s head again and is getting close to Riley.

5. Someone might die?

This is a tough hint to read because Lito and Hernando are obviously standing at a grave but it doesn’t seem like a sad occasion. It’s possible someone might die and they visit another grave along the way and are reminiscing.

WATCH ‘Rick And Morty’ Season 3 Episode

The surprise premiere for Rick And Morty‘s third season on April Fool’s Day was a fine trick by the folks at Adult Swim. In past years, they’ve spent the “holiday” showing Tommy Wiseau’s masterpiece The Room on repeat or replacing all of their normal programs with Chuck Norris: Karate Kommandos, so seeing a new episode of Rick And Morty from 8 pm until midnight EST was pleasant, even if the rest of the season won’t air until this summer.

Along with that, we were treated a few special Rick And Morty spots — including some spirited advertising from Carl’s Jr. that not only hit against some of its more salacious advertising but also let Rick And Morty play around with living cheeseburgers. But the biggest ad of all wasn’t really for a product that exists right now. Sure, there was a fine plug for Shoney’s that should be the talk of the day for their breakfast buffet alone, but we also got a demand for McDonald’s to bring back their Mulan Szechuan dipping sauce.

If you’re unfamiliar with the sauce or were barred from eating at McDonald’s for most of your life, Ad Age has the details behind the promotion that drove Rick Sanchez to mad science:

Mercy’s Low SR Gains Fixed – Hollywood.com Esports

Overwatch: Mercy’s Low SR Gains Fixed

Mercy mains rejoice!

Courtesy of Blizzard Entertainment

Those who play a lot of Mercy in Competitive Play may have noticed that they weren’t gaining as much SR as they did before the latest patch hit. An unforeseen issue in the game caused the value of Mercy’s contributions to be lower, which affected the amount of SR she was awarded for winning a match. According to player reports, the suspected issue was that Mercy’s Fire score remained unaffected by how much she healed, and would only increase when she resurrected players or if she damaged enemies with her pistol.

Fortunately, Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan addressed this very issue in a post on the Battle.net forums:

“We fixed an issue that was causing Mercy’s contributions to be lower as it pertained to Skill Rating reward at the end of a competitive win. We’re still investigating though to make sure the issue is entirely fixed. The fix we put live was integrated on Tuesday but we’re still hearing some reports. We’ll keep working to fix it if it in fact is still broken. We’re trying to verify right now.”

With Season 4 of Competitive Play in full swing, it’s unfortunate that Mercy mains may not have gained the appropriate amount of SR in the past month. On the bright side, the season has just begun so there’s plenty of time left to hit those tier goals!

Simon Cowell Thought Tyra Hosting AGT was a Prank

Simon Cowell was convinced he had been targeted by pranksters when former supermodel Tyra Banks reached out about becoming the new host of America’s Got Talent.

The runway beauty-turned-TV personality was recently announced as the replacement for original presenter Nick Cannon after his abrupt exit from the talent show in February (17), following a dispute with the series’ network bosses.

Music and reality TV mogul Simon, who co-created America’s Got Talent, admits he knew little about Cannon’s departure until it was too late.

“I didn’t know much about (Cannon’s exit) – maybe I should have known more about it…,” he mused to Entertainment Tonight. “Anyway, it happened. I spoke to him, I thought he was going to come back but he wasn’t – then he was, wasn’t – and then in the end, we decided to start filming without him.”

The show didn’t go without a host for long, and Simon couldn’t believe it when he heard Tyra wanted to discuss the position.

“After one day, we get a phone call – Tyra Banks wants to meet,” he recalled. “I thought I was being (pranked) to be honest with you!”

Nick, who fronted the series from 2009 to 2016, publicly congratulated the America’s Next Top Model star on her new gig, and he has since made it clear he holds no grudges against Simon, either.

The 57-year-old Brit said, “He was the first to send me a bottle of Champagne on the first day (of America’s Got Talent’s new season)… which interestingly, he didn’t send to the others (fellow judges).”

Simon is joined by former Spice Girls star Melanie Brown, retired supermodel Heidi Klum, and media personality Howie Mandel on the panel for season 12, and things are looking promising with Tyra as the new host.

“The hardest thing is when you’re trying to replace someone who has been really good, and you don’t want someone who’s going to be the same kind of personality,” he explained. “I mean, look, she’s funny, she gets it. From what I’ve seen so far, I think she is having a good time.”

Tyra made her debut on America’s Got Talent as production for season 12 got underway in California on Monday (27Mar17).

It’s not her only big hosting job – she will also return to front her America’s Next Top Model series for its 24th season.

Banks hosted the popular program for 22 seasons before singer Rita Ora took over for season 23. Tyra returned to the show for the finale, which aired in early March (17).

Jose Mourinho laments lack of killer instinct as Manchester United stumble

Jose Mourinho could not hide his displeasure at his side’s lack of cutting edge as Manchester United failed to make significant ground on their Champions League-chasing rivals in a 0-0 draw against West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The draw — their 11th of the season — extended their undefeated Premier League streak to 19 matches.

United last lost a league game in October when they were humbled 4-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and Mourinho is enjoying his longest unbeaten run in the top flight since October 2005 when his own Chelsea side went 40 games without defeat.

But his side are still four points short of the fourth Champions League spot, having won only four and drawn eight of their last 12 league games at Old Trafford.

And the United coach was left lamenting his side’s inability to kill off opponents.

“We have a lot of draws this season,” Mourinho told BBC Sport. “Teams come here just to defend, goalkeepers come here to be man of the match. “We cannot score a goal even when we are one-on-one. We beat everyone on quality of play and direction of the game, possession, creation and ambition but we drew too many matches.”

United enjoyed 75 percent of the possession against Tony Pulis’s disciplined Albion, but while they took 18 shots to the visitors’ three, they failed to break down their opponents’ back line.

Their reliance on summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has scored 15 of United’s 43 goals this season, was again evident in his absence.

With the striker suspended, a front four of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard had no solution to Albion’s rugged defensive display.

“One team had the ball, one team didn’t. One team tried to win, the other tried to draw,” Mourinho concluded in a tetchy interview.

Pulis, whose West Bromwich team remain eighth, with 44 points, praised his side’s resolve.

“If we won at the end, it would have been unjust,” he acknowledged. “We’re really pleased with the effort and commitment they put in today. United have some really good players. No matter how well set up you are, you’ll always be on your back foot.

“It’s a fabulous point to get at Old Trafford.” The group plays very well together. They play very compact but we had opportunities to spring out of it, like against Arsenal (a 3-1 victory for West Bromwich on March 18).

“Their resilience and commitment was fantastic.”
