West Indies vs Pakistan, 4th T20I, Pakistan tour of West Indies, 2017

Sarfraz marches up, collects the silverware and calls his team upon to pose with the Champions board. If this series was any indication, this could well be the first of a few more on this tour. A huge moment this for all the youngsters, products of the PSL, who’ve stepped up here in rescuing their side just when things seemed to slip away from there. Until the seventh of April, it is time for us to pack our bags from the Caribbean. I’ve been Vineet Anantharaman in the company of Sagar Chawla and Venkatesh bringing you the action. Ta ta!!

Shadab Khan, Man of the Series: “I was bowling slightly faster yesterday. I worked on that and it made a huge difference as I was getting the ball to turn. I don’t mind bowling to either left or right handers.”

Brathwaite: “I really cannot put my finger on anything but we just did not do well today. After the start we had, we were looking to cruise to a big total. We were planning to set a total of 150 but we did not even get close which cost us dear. Rotation of strike is very important but so is keeping wickets in hand. Had we had around 50 dot balls, it could have been different. As a team, the attitude and the fight that we showed would hold us good going forward.”

Sarfraz: “Credit goes to the players, especially the bowlers who did the job for us. The plan was to use Shadab outside the powerplays. The fielding was the best we’ve seen in a long time. Looking forward to the ODI series coming up.”

Hasan Ali, Man of the Match: “The plan was to bowl wicket to wicket. Yesterday’s match wasn’t all that good but the plan was to bowl into the pitch today. Yes, there was a bit of reverse swing around.”

Pakistan wouldn’t complain, not everyday do you get to inflict a 3-1 drubbing away from home. Against the World Champs too. This Windies side had some serious world beaters too, most of whom would now be on their flight for the madness in India. Sets the remainder of the One-Day leg up perfectly for them. Hang in there, the presentations coming your way..

All too easy. Pakistan did try their best towards the end in spicing up matters. But in the end, a target as sub-par as this just did not merit any competition. A good time for Shehzad to hit his straps and find himself some form and he used the opportunity to get himself some spot-saving runs. Babar Azam once again showed how it looks to be elegant while spanking boundaries. Nothing went the way of the Windies in their defence of 125. Pollard hurting his knee at the fence, catches being put down, misfields and some wayward bowling. Eventually, it was the 66 dot balls with the bat in their hands that came back to haunt them.

18.6 Holder to Shoaib Malik, FOUR, seals it in style. Gets a wide tired full toss for help and Malik this time stoops, crouches and stabs it square. That’s the series to Pakistan. 3-1

18.5 Holder to Sarfraz, 1 run, a desperate adventurous tap and a run. To cover. And had he connected with his throw, it could have been curtains. 2 runs needed. Final delivery?

Pakistan beat West Indies by seven wickets to take series 3-1

Ahmed Shehzad scored 53 in 45 balls as Pakistan beat West Indies by seven wickets in the fourth and final Twenty20 match on Sunday to take the series 3-1.

Pakistan reached 127-3 in 19 overs in reply to West Indies’ 124-8.

The tourists won the toss at Queen’s Park Oval and put West Indies into bat with Chadwick Walton top-scoring on 40 with four sixes and two boundaries.

From 52-1, West Indies slumped to 83-7 as Hasan Ali (2-12) and Shadab Khan (2-16) performed economical spells.

Some late hitting from Carlos Brathwaite, who made an undefeated 37 from 24 balls, gave West Indies something to bowl at but it looked unlikely to be enough.

Pakistan opener Kamran Akmal fell to Samuels for 20 but Shehzad pressed on in partnership with Babar Azam (38) to take his team to the brink of victory. With the target down to 15, both were dismissed in quick succession by Kesrick Williams, who bowled Shehzad with the last ball of one over and had Azam caught by substitute Rovman Powell with the first ball of his next.

Sarfraz Ahmed survived the hat-trick ball and Shoaib Malik was dropped before the pair saw Pakistan across the line with an over to spare.

India Open Super Series 2017: PV Sindhu crowned Miss India 2017, beats Carolina Marin in final

PV Sindhu beat Carolina Marin 21-19, 21-16 in the final to record her fourth win over the Spaniard in nine matches. PTI PV Sindhu beat Carolina Marin 21-19, 21-16 in the final to record her fourth win over the Spaniard in nine matches. PTI

This will not quite make up for the disappointment of the Rio Olympics final, but will do nicely for now. PV Sindhu was threatening to take over the mantle of India’s shuttle queen for some time now, and over this week, under the most intense pressure, on home turf, the tall girl from Hyderabad ticked all the boxes. In the quarterfinal, she prevailed over Saina Nehwal, who strode like a colossus in Indian badminton for a decade, and on Sunday, put it across her Rio tormentor Carolina Marin — both in straight games.

The baton was well and truly passed on when Marin’s smash hit the net for a 21-19, 21-16 verdict. It is only Sindhu’s second Super Series title, after the China Open triumph late last year, but coming at the beginning of the year with several big tournaments to come, it is one of her most significant triumphs. There were four other finals at the Yonex-Sunrise India Open on Sunday, but there was no doubt for whom the Siri Fort Sports Complex was bursting at the seams. Every available vantage point was taken, with the organisers too catching the mood. A dancing troupe performed on the court with ‘Jai Ho’ blaring from the public address system.

With such a frenzy cultivated, defeat was not an option. And Sindhu did not disappoint. Even the announcement of the arrival of sports minister Vijay Goel at a critical juncture in the match did not distract her. The significance of the occasion could be gauged from the fact that chief national coach Pullela Gopichand was sitting right behind his protégé, along with the specialist singles coach Indonesian Mulyo Handoyo, for the only time in the tournament.

Despite beating Sindhu in the gold medal match in Rio, Marin enjoys great support in India. She was cheered throughout the week, but as Sindhu arrived on court for the final, the noise almost brought the roof down. Both players knew what was at stake. For Sindhu, a chance to become the leading light in contemporary Indian badminton, and for Marin, who has fallen off the pace in recent times, an opportunity to clinch her first title since the Olympics.

Both shuttlers felt the pressure in the early going, but it was Sindhu who was dictating play. She was the more aggressive player on court, with hard smashes at Marin’s body, drives into the corners and deft net play complemented by panther-like speed while going for the kill. The crowd was living every moment of the 47-minute contest. Whenever Marin succeeded in stringing a few points together, one could sense an anxiety in the stands. A Sindhu point, subsequently, brought out a roar of relief.

The first game was a nip-and-tuck affair. After Marin ate into an early 6-1 lead Sindhu had, there were never more than three points between them. Most points were being decided by errors. The Spaniard caught up at 17-all and even led 19-18. It is there that the match turned. Sindhu restored parity with a kill at the net after a smash. Marin helped her out when, out of anxiety, she hit her own kill wide. A smash at the body sealed the opener, prompting a big fist pump.

Sindhu kept her foot on the pedal at the start of the second game, running up a 4-0 lead in the blink of an eye. Though Marin continued to eat into the margin, she could never get back on level terms thereafter.

Mind games

The two are good friends off court, and even shared some relaxed moments after the match. It did not prevent them, however, from indulging in some mind games on court. Both players were taking their time between points, wandering around the court, and were spoken to by the chair umpire on more than one occasion. For such a significant victory of her career, it was quite an understated celebration from Sindhu. She raised her arms, turned to all corners of the arena, before running towards ‘Gopi sir.’ It, maybe, shows her growing confidence and maturity as she knows it should be the start of bigger things to come.

“It is a very important Super Series tournament, at home and at the start of the year. I was fighting for every point and am very happy at how I played throughout the tournament,” the Indian star said. Marin was left to rue mistakes at crucial stages of the final, but was impressed with the improvement in Sindhu’s game since Rio. “Errors at the end of the first game hurt me badly. I played well here, but every player is improving by the day, and it is small things that make the difference.” The Spaniard is confident her title drought will end soon. “I am getting better after injury. The confidence is coming back and I am motivated to keep fighting hard,” the Olympic champion said.

IPL 2017: In season of injuries, Rohit Sharma wants to put his season of injury behind

Rather than thinking what has happened, it is better to think how I am going to make myself ready. That is how I was thinking about all the time.”

Rohit Sharma Rather than thinking what has happened, it is better to think how I am going to make myself ready. That is how I was thinking about all the time.”Rohit Sharma

THE BUILD-UP to IPL 10 so far has been more about those who’ll miss out rather than those who will grace the stage for the big anniversary edition of the T20 extravaganza. But one familiar face will be using the glitzy platform to make a return to big-ticket cricket after a five-month layoff. And Rohit Sharma, who’s led Mumbai Indians to two title triumphs in the last five years, on Sunday sounded both relieved and excited to be back.

This was his first media appearance since suffering a harrowing injury back in late October, and we’re at a posh South Mumbai hotel where he’s flanked by new coach and fellow batting stylist, Mahela Jayawardene. But ask him about the injury and you can almost see him cringe while recalling the moment when he realized his home season was more or less done with. It led to him having to undergo thigh surgery in London that robbed him off some considerable playing time at a crucial stage in his international career. So much so that the sound that he heard while scrambling across for a single during the final ODI of the India-New Zealand series in Vizag, is still very vivid in his memory.

“I was scared when that happened. It’s something which has never happened to me. I heard a very loud noise while taking a run. I was a little scared until we got an MRI done, I did not know what to expect and what it was. But once everything was clear, once the days passed by, we spoke to a lot of doctors around the world and with Patrick (Farhart, the Indian team physio) as well, they all gave me the confidence saying it was not a major problem, it’s just a small injury that you need to go through,” he said.

A lot has changed since Rohit limped off around the time the lengthy home season was just about getting warmed up. India won every series across all formats, and consolidated their reign at the top of Test cricket for starters. A number of Australian players aren’t Kohli’s “friends” anymore and India has a new triple centurion, one who might not have played if Rohit had been fit. In many ways, Rohit will have to start afresh and the IPL, a tournament that he’s taken by storm with the bat very often, could be just the stage he needs to make his presence felt again. Rohit will obviously be a shoo-in for the Indian squad that will travel to England to defend the Champions Trophy in June. But having started off with a special series against New Zealand, which was one of his best in Test cricket, missing out on 10 Tests must have been debilitating, especially since he’s yet to make the longer format his own.

So it was only natural for him to not take too kindly to his rehab stint at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore being referred to as a “holiday” by one reporter. “I was not on holiday. I was in Bangalore (National Cricket Academy) if you want to call that as a holiday destination then you may,” he said before adding, “Most important thing at that moment is your mind-set. Rather than thinking what has happened, it is better to think how I am going to make myself ready. That is how I was thinking about all the time. It was tough to sit in the hotel room, watching the team play. It is always tough. But I guess you have to go through it. I have been through it many times before. These things happen. I was only focusing on how quicker I can get back on to the field.”

While most of the interaction was dominated by queries and responses to how Mumbai Indians are preparing and hoping to fare in the tenth edition of the IPL; the more poignant moments surrounded their long-standing captain’s inopportune injury and how he’s coped with it. But he didn’t quite agree with a suggestion that the layoff had set his career back a few steps. Said Rohit, “I don’t think so. I am just 29. Injuries are part and parcel. Five months of missing cricket does not do any bad. These things are bound to happen. Even in future, these things will happen. The focus is always on, if you get injures, to stay strong and come back stronger. I am looking forward. There is so much cricket coming up.”

Doctor Who Lands His First Gay Companion

Doctor Who star Pearl Mackie is about to make TV history by becoming the Timelord’s first gay assistant.

Her character Bill Potts’ sexuality will be revealed at the beginning of the first new episode when the sci-fi series returns to the BBC on 15 April (17).

Gay and bisexual characters have featured in Doctor Who in the past, but this is the first time his companion has come out.

“It shouldn’t be a big deal in the 21st Century,” Mackie told the BBC. “It’s about time, isn’t it? That representation is important, especially on a mainstream show.

“It’s important to say people are gay, people are black – there are also aliens in the world as well so watch out for them.

“I remember watching TV as a young mixed race girl not seeing many people who looked like me, so I think being able to visually recognise yourself on screen is important.”

Mackie has replaced Jenna Coleman as the Doctor’s new companion, and she admits her life became crazy overnight after she was named the Timelord’s sidekick a year ago (Apr16): “My Twitter follower count went from 400-and-something to 16,500 in about two hours, so that was pretty mental (crazy),” she said, “but it’s been really nice; everyone seems to be really excited. It’s sort of like being welcomed into a family and all the fans have been really welcoming.”

She joins the show as another star is planning an exit – Peter Capaldi, who currently plays the Doctor, has announced he’ll be leaving the series after this year’s (17) Christmas episode. The news of his departure has sparked speculation the next Doctor Who will be a woman – another first for the popular TV sci-fi franchise.

Simon Cowell Thought Tyra Hosting AGT was a Prank

Simon Cowell was convinced he had been targeted by pranksters when former supermodel Tyra Banks reached out about becoming the new host of America’s Got Talent.

The runway beauty-turned-TV personality was recently announced as the replacement for original presenter Nick Cannon after his abrupt exit from the talent show in February (17), following a dispute with the series’ network bosses.

Music and reality TV mogul Simon, who co-created America’s Got Talent, admits he knew little about Cannon’s departure until it was too late.

“I didn’t know much about (Cannon’s exit) – maybe I should have known more about it…,” he mused to Entertainment Tonight. “Anyway, it happened. I spoke to him, I thought he was going to come back but he wasn’t – then he was, wasn’t – and then in the end, we decided to start filming without him.”

The show didn’t go without a host for long, and Simon couldn’t believe it when he heard Tyra wanted to discuss the position.

“After one day, we get a phone call – Tyra Banks wants to meet,” he recalled. “I thought I was being (pranked) to be honest with you!”

Nick, who fronted the series from 2009 to 2016, publicly congratulated the America’s Next Top Model star on her new gig, and he has since made it clear he holds no grudges against Simon, either.

The 57-year-old Brit said, “He was the first to send me a bottle of Champagne on the first day (of America’s Got Talent’s new season)… which interestingly, he didn’t send to the others (fellow judges).”

Simon is joined by former Spice Girls star Melanie Brown, retired supermodel Heidi Klum, and media personality Howie Mandel on the panel for season 12, and things are looking promising with Tyra as the new host.

“The hardest thing is when you’re trying to replace someone who has been really good, and you don’t want someone who’s going to be the same kind of personality,” he explained. “I mean, look, she’s funny, she gets it. From what I’ve seen so far, I think she is having a good time.”

Tyra made her debut on America’s Got Talent as production for season 12 got underway in California on Monday (27Mar17).

It’s not her only big hosting job – she will also return to front her America’s Next Top Model series for its 24th season.

Banks hosted the popular program for 22 seasons before singer Rita Ora took over for season 23. Tyra returned to the show for the finale, which aired in early March (17).

‘Total War: Warhammer II’ announced, coming to PC this year

Sega Europe has announced the second of three planned games in the Total War: Warhammer series. Aptly named Total War: Warhammer II, the game will pit players against each other in a race to become the first to either save or destroy the Great Vortex.

Along the way, you’ll build and expand your empire, develop cities, raise armies and fight “grand-scale” battles in the classic Total War style.

The campaign will play out across four new continents: Ulthuan, Naggaroth, The Southlands and Lustria. British video game developer Creative Assembly says there will also be a vast, combined map that covers the geographic areas of the first and second games.

Gamers can choose from four new playable races (High Elves, Dark Elves, Lizardmen and another that hasn’t yet been revealed), each with unique campaign mechanics and army rosters of Legendary Lords, Heroes, monsters, troops and siege weapons. Shortly after launch, an update will enable gamers to play through the campaign as any owned, playable race from the first title in the trilogy.

The first game in the series arrived less than a year ago on May 24, 2016, for Windows before finding its way to Linux in November. Game director Ian Roxburgh said the success of the first entry increased their ambition.

Total War: Warhammer II is set to arrive on PC sometime this year; unfortunately, a more specific launch window wasn’t provided.

India-Australia series was the best of all: Rohit Sharma

Praising the highly competitive nature of the recently concluded four-Test series between India and Australia, fit-again batsman Rohit Sharma felt it was the best among the four home rubbers this season.

“The last series against the Australians was the best among the 3-4 series at home because of the way it went through from the first Test. Losing the first Test and then bouncing back to win two Test matches (to win the series 2-1) was a fantastic effort (by India),” said Sharma in Mumbai on Sunday.

The flamboyant batsman, who played in the first of the three Test rubber against New Zealand before getting injured in the ODI game against the Kiwis at Vizag to miss the rest of the Test season, said the beauty of the series was the fact that different individuals came through to fill the gaps and performed well too.

“It was not about one individual; a lot of guys came in at different times, took up the challenge and performed, which is why it was the best series. The wickets were not easy and were challenging for batters. It was wonderful to watch from outside.”

He insisted that although both teams fought hard they never crossed the limits vis-a-vis player behaviour and felt some incidents were blown out of proportion.

“India-Australia series have always seen good rivalry over the years and I was not surprised at what happened. When you play against a top side in the world, these things are bound to happen. As long as one remembers not to cross limits it’s good. “It was a hard-fought battle and some things were blown out of proportion. Players know what needs to be done on and off field,” he concluded.

The series was bitterly fought and there was a lot of verbal duels indulged by both the teams’ players right through the four-game rubber that ended with India’s series triumph at Dharamsala last month-end.
