Shooting with the stars

Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir Kapoor.

Mark Bennington has become a local. Since his first visit to India in 2010, the 47-year-old American photographer has mastered the all-purpose Indian head nod; punctuates his sentences with “na” or “ya” (but not “bro”, not yet); and since he’s made Mumbai his home, hung out with Bollywood stars. His book, Living the Dream: The Life of the ‘Bollywood’ Actor (HarperCollins), was published last month, a project that was in the making for nearly seven years. Sitting at a cafe in Versova, Mumbai, Bennington chats about taking pictures, being the new Tom Alter and his new project.

Excerpts from a conversation:

You’ve shot people across the Bollywood board — stars, strugglers and those in between. How did you pick your subjects?

My idea was to get people who would represent all aspects of the spectrum.

There are actors and then there are money-making machines. So, there’s Salman Khan who represents the Khans; Dev Anand, Dharmendra and Jeetendra represent the older generation; Deepti Naval and the late Om Puri for parallel cinema and so on. Rajkummar Rao and Swara Bhaskar were starting out when I shot them, and they’re playing leads in films today. I wanted people on the periphery such as Bobby Darling, Rakhi Sawant, and street performers like Gabbar Singh, as well. That was super important to me, to have that balance.

Some of the pictures seem candid, like Bhaskar’s or Ranbir Kapoor’s, compared to Kareena Kapoor’s or Alia Bhatt’s photographs.

I feel the opposite way. Everybody I shot knew there was a camera around them. Take Ranbir, for instance, it looks candid but it’s not — I can tell that he’s looking in that direction but it’s almost like giving me a shot. The Kareena photo is a picture of the diva. The shots set themselves up, and I’m just there to take them.

Mark Bennington. Mark Bennington.

Is there anybody else you wish you could have photographed?

Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan said no; so did Amitabh Bachchan. I would have loved to shoot Kajol — DDLJ was the first Bollywood movie I watched — but she wasn’t available. I really wanted to shoot Johnny Lever but he refused as well. I wish I could have shot Amrish Puri, but he’d passed away five years before I reached Mumbai. There is one star who said he’d let me shoot him if his was the cover image of the book. I can’t tell you who (laughs); there’s no ‘off the record’ in Bollywood.

Fine. You were a successful TV show actor yourself. How did professional photography happen to you?

I saw Saturday Night Fever three times when I was eight and loved it. When I turned 18, I moved to New York and joined the New Actor’s Workshop; I did a lot of theatre. Then I moved to Los Angeles, got a good agent

and manager and started getting steady work in TV shows like NYPD Blue, V.I.P. and Star Trek: Voyager.

My grandfather was an amateur photographer and he left me all these cameras and lenses after he died. I was 33 when I began to tinker with them. I started taking photos of my friends and put a book together. Within six months, I was making a living as a headshot photographer. In 2009, I arrived in Delhi on New Year’s Eve and then came to Mumbai and started this project.

You made your Bollywood debut in Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015). Do you think you could be the new Tom Alter, play all the White parts in Hindi films?

I played Deputy Commissioner Wilkie. It was a two-day shoot in the middle of my honeymoon in Goa. I shot Tom Alter at Prithvi Theatre for the book right before I was leaving for Kolkata and I said, ‘Hey Tom, I’m going to be the next Tom Alter’. And he said, ‘Be my guest’.

What are you working on now?

Another book. It’s called Mi Mumbai. I’m taking photographs of Bombay people now, from all sections of society.

Time and again we have heard heartwarming stories that reassure us that blood-relation is not all in the world but it’s love and compassion that can save the world. Loving one’s own grandchildren may be easy and quite natural, but giving it all to a rescued kid with a terminal illness is something else. Such is the story of little Nana and her ‘granny’ Li Xianju — that will reaffirm your faith in humanity.

Li Xianju of China spotted little Nana in a woven basket near a bridge, when she was a few days old. The 78-year-old woman fell in love with the little one instantly and decided to give all her love to her, who was abandoned by her parents.

However, two years after Nana was adopted by Xianju, Chongqing native, the girl now 8, was diagnosed with the brittle bone disease. A rare congenital disorder that jeopardise bones in the patient’s body even with slightest moment or touch, making it susceptible to breaking easily. The disease makes leading a normal life difficult for the patient, let alone doing regular activities like walking, standing or even eating. But nothing came in between their love.

The old but fit grandmother took charge of the kid and has been trying to make her lead a normal life as possible. She “began to carry Nana on her back wherever they went as the girl found it difficult to walk due to the disorder”, a report by the China Daily said.

The loving granny not only carries her around but also helps her in school. She helps little Nana even in the classroom and supports her in doing her homework and also attend class together.

Few of the heartwarming images of Nana and Xianju were recently shared on CCTV, China’s Facebook page and it got a lot of positive reaction. People applauded the old woman for her endless and selfless love and effort.

UNC taking survive and advance to new level with white-knuckle title redemption tour

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The North Carolina Tar Heels’ quest for redemption has devolved into a perilous exercise in avoiding regurgitation.

No team chokes its way into the national title game. But Carolina has flirted with it hard.

Three times during this NCAA tournament, UNC has coughed up leads and felt the threat of elimination closing in. First, Arkansas came nipping at the Heels in the second round, rallying from 17 points down to take a five-point lead late, but failing to hang on. Then it was Kentucky, roaring back in the final minute and forcing a last-second basket to eliminate the Wildcats in the South Region final.

And then there was the carnival of near-collapse here Saturday night against Oregon in the Final Four. The key word being “near.”

North Carolina held on, 77-76, and will advance to play Gonzaga for the title that agonizingly eluded the Heels last year. That’s the most important thing – doesn’t matter whether you march into Monday or stagger in, as long as you get there.

But my goodness did they make it hard on themselves late.

Two veteran players stunningly missed four free throws in the final six seconds, but the Heels erased those errors by grabbing two offensive rebounds to prevent Oregon from attempting a winning shot.

View photos UNC’s Roy Williams reacts to gameplay during the Tar Heels’ win over Oregon on Saturday. (Getty) More

First, senior Kennedy Meeks stepped up with 5.8 seconds left and thudded both foul shots off the front rim. But Theo Pinson, the man of a thousand small contributions for Carolina, soared over Oregon’s Jordan Bell to swipe away the rebound and guide it into the hands of junior guard Joel Berry.

Berry was then fouled and sent to the line with four seconds left. A 79 percent foul shooter, Berry doubled down on the Meeks misses with a pair of his own – the first one long and the second one short. But once again Bell was outmaneuvered for the rebound – this time by Meeks, authoring his own mini-redemption within a game he largely dominated before his own missed foul shots.

After Meeks grabbed the last of his 14 rebounds, to go with a career-high-tying 25 points, he whipped the ball back outside to Pinson, who began dribbling wildly away from all green uniforms – then slipped and nearly went straight out of bounds before wheeling around.

“I was like, ‘Dude, what are you doing?’ ” Pinson said.

He collected himself and finally heard the horn, joyously throwing the ball into the University of Phoenix Stadium air. The escape was accomplished, one offensive board at a time.

“Theo saved Kennedy,” Berry said. “And Kennedy saved me.”

And Carolina saved its season by the thinnest of margins, but at least in a characteristic way. The Heels lead the nation in offensive rebounding percentage, and they came up with the biggest two of the year late Saturday.

“Nobody wins a game like that,” said Pinson, shaking his head. “Well, I guess we did. We don’t want to win that way again.”

Here is the way North Carolina has won its past two games:

• By being outscored a combined 14-2 in the final 55 seconds by Kentucky and Oregon.

• By missing its final five foul shots – the four against the Ducks and a missed front end against the Wildcats that led to the tying shot.

• By going the final 5:53 against Oregon missing all five field-goal attempts and seven of 13 free throws.

And this is from the team that had all that tournament experience last year, advancing to within a Villanova buzzer beater of winning it all. The Final Four veterans sure appeared to have the sweatiest palms in Glendale on Saturday.

For a loose, jaunty bunch that has danced and laughed all season long, the last stretch toward that dearly desired summit has become a nerve-wracking slog.

“Very stressful,” said Berry, who had a rough night on a sore ankle (2 of 14 from the field, 5 of 9 from the line). “I mean, my heart was beating.”

3 dead in crash of bus taking students to Swedish ski resort

A bus carrying Swedish high school students to a ski resort crashed Sunday in central Sweden, killing three people and injuring 20 others — seven of them seriously, rescue officials said.

The 52 students were en route to a ski resort with seven adults, including the driver, when the accident occurred on a main highway south of Sveg, a small town 430 kilometers (260 miles) northwest of the capital, Stockholm.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known, but the road reportedly was icy when the accident occurred about 7 a.m. (0500 GMT). Pictures showed the bus lying on its side in a ditch beside the highway.

Rescue services spokesman Peter Nystedt said some 30 others sustained minor injuries.

The father of Stina Almqvist, one of the students on the bus, said he was awakened by a call from his “panic-stricken” daughter.

“She just screamed and screamed,” Fredrik Almqvist told the Expressen tabloid. “I can still hear her screams.”

Friends of the students from Angskolan high school in Skene gathered at the school on Sunday.

A priest from a nearby church in town in the southwest Sweden, Goran Landgren, told reporters at the school that the accident had “deeply upset them all.”

Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said the accident “leaves me and the whole country in sorrow.”

Victoria Beckham NOT Taking Part in James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke

Victoria Beckham hit headlines when she announced she was taking part in James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, but now it has been revealed it was actually part of a bigger sketch for the comedian’s chat show.

The former Spice Girls star shared a behind-the-scenes look at her work with James being filmed on her Instagram Stories, telling her followers, “So we are here about to shoot Carpool Karaoke“, before turning the camera onto James as he got into the driver’s seat.

But Thursday night’s (30Mar17) edition of The Late Late Show with James Corden revealed Victoria wasn’t actually doing Carpool Karaoke – the scenes were part of a hilarious Mannequin skit instead.

James told viewers that both he and Victoria were massive fans of the 1987 Andrew McCarthy-Kim Cattrall film Mannequin, and had decided to film their own take on the story for his show.

In the skit, Victoria plays a mannequin who comes to life and falls in love with James, but he is the only person who can see her as anything other than a dummy.

James is seen laughing and dancing with Victoria in the Late Late Show dressing room, while workers on the show look on in bemusement as all they can see is him having fun with a mannequin.

The host then makes off with the mannequin, and goes for a car ride with her – which is where the Carpool Karaoke segment comes into play. While he and Victoria drive around Los Angeles, James asks her if she wants to listen to some music, before putting on Spice Girls’ hit Spice Up Your Life.

Despite the singer belting out the track, when the pair pull up to a traffic light, a passenger in a neighboring car sees James singing along with the mannequin – much to his confusion.

The segment ends with Victoria being reunited with people of her kind – a group of mannequins in a shop window.

The news that Victoria wasn’t actually starring in Carpool Karaoke is likely to come as a relief to her former Spice Girls bandmate Mel B, who was apparently “livid” when she found out the initial news.

According to Britain’s The Sun newspaper, Mel was left fuming that Victoria was “all of a sudden embracing her Spice Girls past after years of trying to distance herself from the band.”

Victoria and Mel C were the two Spice Girl members who refused to get involved in a reunion to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of hit song Wannabe, leading to a rift between the group.

Ivanka Trump taking formal role in administration amid ethics concerns

President Donald Trump’s elder daughter, Ivanka Trump, announced today that she will take an official position in his administration, according to a statement.

Her unofficial role has grown in recent weeks, and she was granted security clearance and a West Wing office, drawing scrutiny from some.

Ivanka Trump will be an assistant to the president but will not take a salary, she said in a statement first reported by The New York Times.

“I have heard the concerns some have with my advising the president in my personal capacity while voluntarily complying with all ethics rules, and I will instead serve as an unpaid employee in the White House Office, subject to all of the same rules as other federal employees,” she said in a statement today.

She added, “Throughout this process, I have been working closely and in good faith with the White House counsel and my personal counsel to address the unprecedented nature of my role.”

She is not the only family member in her household to have a title. Her husband, Jared Kushner, is a senior adviser to the president.

The White House released its own statement about the move, saying that it is “pleased.”

“Ivanka’s service as an unpaid employee furthers our commitment to ethics, transparency and compliance and affords her increased opportunities to lead initiatives driving real policy benefits for the American public that would not have been available to her previously,” the White House statement read.

When her increased security clearance and West Wing office were announced, Ivanka Trump said, “There is no modern precedent for an adult child of the president.”

At the time, Kathleen Clark, an ethics expert and a professor at Washington University, described the arrangement as “outrageous.”

View gallery Ivanka Trump taking formal role in administration amid ethics concerns (ABC News)

“This is extremely troubling because the White House seems to be pretending that it can treat somebody as a government employee — give them an office and responsibilities — and not be bound by government ethics standards,” she said.

“They assert that she will voluntarily comply with government ethics standards. That means they think she doesn’t have to comply,” Clark continued.

Now she thinks that the formal title is “absolutely a step in the right direction.”

“The most significant thing about today is the White House has walked away from the indefensible position that it had last week, that she didn’t have to comply with ethics rules but she was doing so voluntarily. That ‘voluntary’ language was what really obscured the point. They were claiming that she had a choice to do it,” Clark told ABC News.

In spite of the title, Ivanka Trump is not technically required to divest from her company, Clark said.

“She must either divest or recuse herself from any matters that can affect her financial interest. For example, half of her business is based on jewelry, so pretend the administration is weighing an enormous tax on jewelry. That’s something she would not be able to be in the room for if she doesn’t fully divest,” Clark said.

ABC News political commentator Cokie Roberts said that “she is solving the ethics issue” with the title, as it forces her to comply with ethics rules.

The title formalizes her existing role, though she has been no stranger to the White House. She has been present for family events — like the various inauguration celebrations — as well as closed-door meetings and sit-downs with foreign leaders.

In February she met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the White House, where they were part of a roundtable discussion on female entrepreneurs, and she met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

When German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the White House earlier this month, Ivanka Trump was seated right beside her.

Ivanka Trump’s involvement in business roundtable discussions could be attributed to her business background at her namesake fashion label and her father’s real estate empire, but she has also had a say in other causes that she is passionate about.

When the president held a listening session about domestic and international human trafficking on Feb. 23, he started his remarks by thanking his daughter and then–senior counselor for economic initiatives Dina Powell “for working so hard to set this up.”

ABC News’ Alex Mallin contributed to this report.
